5 Ways To Improve Your English Offline

Many people try to improve their English online by signing up to Internet courses listening to podcasts, and reading articles like this. We all know that one of the best ways to improve your English is to practice it in the real world. The following is the top 5 best ways you can practice your English offline.

5. Join English Speaking Clubs or Groups

meetup.com is a great way to find other local English learners in your community who create events to hang out and practice English. It is a great way to meet new people and practice your English. They have all kinds of other meet ups as well. Not only for English practice. You can also go on city tour meet ups, hiking meet ups, and singles meet ups. Who knows you might even find that native speaker boyfriend or girlfriend that you have been looking for.

4. Sales Representatives at the mall

What better place to practice your English than at the mall. If you want to practice your fashion vocabulary go to a clothing store. If you want to practice your  electronics vocabulary go to the apple store and pretend to buy something from the sales representative. He will be more than happy to have a conversation with you. You don’t even need to buy anything. Just remember the best way to end that conversation is to tell them “you will think about it.” Try to go to a store where the employees work by the hour and not on commission. This way as evil as this advice might seem. You really aren’t wasting their time just entertaining them while you are practicing your English.

3.  The Subway

Some subway rides are long and boring. Start a conversation with the person beside you. Tell them you are new in town and would love to get some advice on sights and attractions that are popular in the city. Most subway patrons will be more than happy to discuss their city with you during the ride.

2.  Volunteer at a retirement home

Senior citizens love having people keep them company at their old age. They are full with stories and can have conversations with you for hours. You will not only see great improvement in your listening and conversation skills you are spending quality time with someone who will greatly appreciate it. Why go to an English school when you can have unlimited one on one English conversation at a retirement home for free.

1. Speed Dating events

Speed dating is the ultimate way to test and improve your conversation skills. During most events you will be forced to converse with a person of the opposite sex for five minutes. Some events will even set you up with up to twenty five dates for the night. Depending on how well your conversations go, your dates might choose to meet you again for some more conversations on future dates. If you are really lucky maybe it will lead to some private oral conversations in the bedroom.

  • Very good idea, however if the person is in non-english speaking countries, what should we do to improve our English skill dramatically? I really want to know the know-how about it. Looking forward to answering the question.

    • The best way to practice with English speakers in a non English speaking country would be to find where the Expats hang out. Expats are foreigners that are living abroad. For example if you are from Tokyo. Google "Expat events in Tokyo". It will show you where you can meet many foreigners to practice your English with.
