Top 10 Shows on Netflix to Learn English

July 1, 2015 by gigw5128 1 Comment

One of the best ways to learn the English language is by watching TV shows. Today we live in an era where we can have access to TV shows almost instantly on a wide variety of devices such as televisions, tablets, computers, mobile phones, and so on. We now have access to watch shows on the bus, subway, and even when riding our bike. Just kidding do not ride a bike and watch TV shows, you may damage your phone.

Netflix is a monthly streaming service which provides its users with a huge variety of television shows and movies to watch. The following is a list of the top 10 Netflix shows to watch to help you improve your English.

10. The Walking Dead

walking dead

The walking dead is an excellent show to improve your English skills. It is about a group of people stuck together. They don’t work, they don’t need to worry about paying rent. Their only worry is to gather supplies and protect themselves from the flesh eating zombies. They have all day to converse in English. The show is all English conversation with some zombie killing once in a while. This show will help English create conversations with people that you have nothing else to talk about with.

9. Arrested Development

This is probably one of the most unique and funny shows on Netflix. The show follows Michael Bluth and his crazy family members. The show is narrated just like a fictional story, and is filled with hilarious twists and turns. This show will help English learners gain better creativity in their writing, along with developing a better sense of humor from this shows funny storyline.

8. Archer

Archer isn’t your regular type of animated show. It is like a cross between Arrested Development and James Bond. This is probably one of the most advanced English shows for English learners. It is full with inside jokes, and random dialogue. Many of the jokes are spread over each season and throughout the series. I would recommend English learners to start watching this show from season one episode one.

7. Orange Is The New Black

Based on a true story, this Netflix original comedy follows Piper Chapman as she goes from living comfortably in New York City to living in an all-female prison. This show has a wide variety of female characters with different talking styles and provides a great way for English learners to practice their listening. There are many small story lines to follow, and it is just an addictive show to watch.

6. Bill Nye The Science Guy

Set in New York in the 1960’s, Mad Men follows one of the city’s most prestigious ad agencies on Madison Avenue. The show follows creative director Don Draper. This is probably one of my most favorite shows of all time. The English used is proper and old fashioned. The characters have manners, and the time period is classic. This is a great show for English learns to study how do great presentations like Don Draper.

4. Departures

It is often said that life is more often about the journey than the destination. This is a Canadian travel series where two twenty year old high school friends travel the world exploring different cultures. Unlike most travel shows this show showcases places and communities that aren’t usually covered by mainstream travel shows. It shows the troubles of travel abroad and language barriers

3. Breaking Bad

Walter White is a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. He decided to use his chemistry background to cook blue meth. His partner is his former student. This show is about one of the craziest teacher student relationships of all time. It is a great show with awesome character development. Walter is an excellent speaker who knows exactly how much information to discuss with someone and how much information to keep hidden from someone. It is a great show to learn how people create conversation trying to convince or persuade someone.

2. BoJack Horseman

It is a show about a talking horse. Of Course! This is a show about a fictional horse who can speak that is trying to reignite his acting career. It was a funny show with great voice work from Will Arnett from “Arrested Development” , and Aaron Paul from “Breaking Bad.” The show has many funny jokes, and uses a lot of humor to keep the viewer attached to their seats. Each episode has a crazy story and is very entertaining to watch. This is a great show to improve your celebrity talk English.

1. Louie

louie

The show follows a stand up comedian called Louie through his everyday life. It is a bit like Seinfeld since it doesn’t have very much of a plot. The show is very similar to Louie’s real everyday life. It also incorporates some of his stand up scenes and shows. It is a comedic masterpiece and a show that will help English learners improve their everyday English.
